ManeGain® has developed a Hair Rejuvenation Therapy that combines three types of energy to help restore your scalp and hair follicles and regrow your hair: Low Lever Light Therapy (LLLT), Photonics (visible light), and Magnetic Pulses (MP). The low level laser therapy (650nm, 5nW red lasers) detaches the DHT (dihydrotestosterone)* that is attached to the hair follicle and is the primary cause of hair loss. Initially, DHT reduces the strength and diameter of each hair follicle, resulting in increasingly thinner hair. Over time, DHT builds up in the hair follicle cells and signals them to “turn off.” This in turn causes the hair follicle to atrophy and constricts blood flow to and from the hair follicle, resulting in hair loss. To correct the effects of this this atrophy once the DHT is removed, visible light is used to strengthen, revitalized, and rejuvenate skin cells and magnetic pulse therapy is used to increase blood flow. Magnetic pulse therapy has been used for over 40 years to increase blood flow and circulation. To learn more about the technology, click here.

In 1995, the FDA has approved the use of LLLT in the treatment and remediation of hair loss in men and women. There are over 15 years of studies involved in the treatment of male patterned baldness using LLLT, and on January 18, 2007, the FDA approved the use of an LLLT device to stimulate and promote hair growth. Clinical trials have shown a 93% success rate with an average of 19 new terminal hairs per square centimeter increase, as well as an increase in hair thickness and tensile strength. ManeGain’s additional use of visible light and magnetic pulse will improve the success rate over 93% and maximize the effects of LLLT with hair thickness and tensile strength and growth lengths.

The FDA has approved 650mW, 5nm red lasers as safe and effective devices for the treatment of hair loss. In addition, there are no detrimental effects of magnetic pulses (a magnetic field) on the human body. The magnetic pulse generated only penetrates about 10 nanometers into the skin and does NOT pass past the skull. The light sources used are in the visual spectrum and do NOT include uVA or uVB light. Finally, there are no contra-indicators when combining lasers, visible light or magnetic pulse therapy.

Since another company (Austin Medical Technologies) manufactures the ManeGain HairGrower, we do not file for FDA approval. Austin Medical Technologies is in the process of filing its 510k approval for a Class II medical device and the FDA clearance process takes some time. However there are two laser devices that have received FDA clearance for hair regrowth: a hand-held comb-like device with 9 lasers for men and an in-office laser hood.  The ManeGain HairGrower uses the same lasers as these devices and well as added photonics and pure magnetic pulses to accelerate hair rejuvenation.

Since hair grows so slowly (as slowly as 1/10th an inch per month if you are over 40 and 1/4th of an inch under 20), you should not see any results for 8 weeks if you have hair loss. You should be clearly able to determine if your hair is growing by 12 weeks.

If you are looking to see thickening of the hair follicle, results can be as little as 6 weeks. With thickening hair, you will only see an improved thickness on the part of the hair that is coming out of the follicle due to the ManeGain Therapy strengthening and thickening the hair follicle diameter.

You will need to continue your bi-weekly (twice a week) sessions for 25 weeks (50 sessions total) if you are male, 20 weeks (40 sessions) if you are female, for the total benefit of the ManeGain Hair Regrowth process to be effective. After that time, you will only have to undergo treatment every 6 to 8 weeks for a 25-minute session in order to maintain the benefits of your long term rejuvenation program.

ManeGain, in cooperation with our Hair Salon, Day Spa, and Beauty Spa partners guarantees that you will see hair regrowth between 12 and 14 weeks or your money back! There is a caveat that you cannot miss any two sessions per week during the initial warranty period and cannot be undergoing activities that will lessen the chance of hair growth. Prior to starting your regrowth therapy, you will meet with a hair specialist to review all the documentation and what are the procedures involved with the ManeGain Restoration Process. To see the complete Confidence Guarantee, please click here.

ManeGain Confidence Warranty™ is essentially a bet that you and ManeGain will see returning hair growth within the first 12 weeks of Therapy. Two things are necessary to accomplish this; that the Session Protocol is strictly followed, and that you are in good health. Thus, our decision to extend the ManeGain Confidence Warranty™ to you is based on whether you have a lifestyle that statistically will lend itself to hair regrowth within 12 weeks. So, when we extend the ManeGain Confidence Warranty™ to you, we are both on the same side of the bet!

The most important criteria to ManeGain in determining good health is based on the chemicals (drugs, steroids, hormones, etc.) you add to your body. We categorize drugs as either ‘voluntary’ or ‘required.’ If you are taking voluntary drugs, and these are generally non-poisonous, not habit forming, and natural in origin, then they don’t present much of an obstacle in winning our bet. However, certain voluntarily consumed, non-prescription, ‘supplemental’ drugs can create issues, and we evaluate them on an individual bases.

‘Required’ drugs, or drugs that you need to take, can weigh unfavorably against our bet. Required to us generally means prescription or habitual. Because prescription drugs usually treat persistent medical health issues, a ‘red flag’ is raised in trying to qualify you for the ManeGain Confidence Warranty™.

Drugs that have established a habitual use pattern are by our definition not healthy. The odds are that something is wrong with the body systemically to establish such a requirement. Yes, this includes nicotine as well as drugs for the recovery from other drugs.

So with the information you provided on your Customer Application & Questionnaire, combined with our experience, we have a very good idea whether you fall into the 90% of the population whose hair loss is due to Androgenic Alopecia. If you are one of the 90%, we place the bet, and extend to you the ManeGain Confidence Warranty™.

Typically a hair follicle wakes up, grows a hair, and goes to sleep as many as 25 times in the lifetime of an average human. As a person grows older, the time a follicle is awake gradually gets shorter. DHT (dihydrotestosterone)* shortens this time drastically; ManeGain Hair Rejuvenation Therapy™ gets rid of this DHT and increases the length of time your hair follicle remains awake.

One form of alopecia (hair loss) is called Alopecia of Senescence, which is hair loss caused by aging. Typically each time a hair follicle wakes up, it doesn’t stay awake as long is did the previous time. After 20 or so times, around age 60 for a significant number of people, the hair system starts getting worn out. Remember, up until a couple of hundred years ago the average person did not live past 45, so why did he need hair that lasted to 60?

At 25 years of age, hair loss is almost always the result of DHT, which is what ManeGain takes care of. As you age, the DHT problem becomes a progressively smaller part of the total hair loss problem. At 40 we are pretty sure it will still be enough of the problem that at 12 weeks you will see new hairs in the mirror.

The question is will you be able to easily see a difference after 12 weeks at 60 years of age? We think that by age 60, the combination of graying (transparency) and the relative contribution of Alopecia of Senescence to the hair loss make this event timing a bad bet. Although ManeGain Hair Rejuvenation Therapy™ will likely regrow your hair after age 50, it is statistically probable that it will take longer than 12 weeks. So, because we offer the ManeGain Confidence Warranty™ up to 12 weeks, we cannot make the bet with you and provide you the Warranty.

No. You might see some lights flashing out of the corner of your eyes, but you will not feel anything when you sit under the ManeGain hood. A few clients have said they free a sensation of warmth on there scalp, and are more relaxed and stress free following a Therapy Session.

Twenty-five minutes.

There are three categories of pricing based on the number of sessions purchased: HALO Spa Session (Single Session); HALO Light Therapy (Preventative / Maintenance Packages: Premiere, Deluxe, Ultra & Elite) and Intensive HALO Therapy (Restorative Packages). Pricing is highest for each single session, but when purchased as a package, prices are discounted and range from $50 to $80 per session. Packages include the Restorative Package (Intensive – Long Term) and the Preventative / Maintenance Packages. Click here to find out more about pricing and packages.

First, most other LLLT systems use a stationary laser that only concentrates the coherent light on one part of the scalp. Essentially, due to the properties of coherent light, the lasers miss some parts of the hair follicle. The ManeGain solution sweeps across your entire scalp, enabling the laser to attack the DHT (dihydrotestosterone)* deposits from multiple angles. In addition, ManeGain is the only company that adds the healing and restorative benefits of visible light (photonics) and magnetic pulses to aid in the rejuvenation of the hair follicles and increase blood flow and circulation to them. Combined, these three energies help accelerate your hair regrowth.  For more detailed information about the technology, click here.

Shadowing is when hair is blocking the laser.  This is an important design feature we addressed in the development of the HairGrower.

             Picture of Melanin

If the lasers are in a fix location, then there would be some possible shadowing going on.  With the HairGrower, the lasers move in a sweeping motion while overlapping their fields of emission.  We cover and penetrate the entire hair mass (root, stem, shaft) from every angle and in effect beam around and through the individual hairs.  But there is more to it.

We have an additional advantage because hair color is not solid.  Hair, which has no intrinsic color, has small blobs of melanin that when viewed from a distance give the appearance of a solid color, but in fact is not.  The attached image  is a slide slice example.  The small blobs are the melanin pigment.  Note the space between the blobs of color which allow for light to pass through.

While the photochemical properties of melanin make it an excellent photo-protectant to absorb harmful UV-radiation (ultraviolet) very well, laser photons blast right around (and through) these cells because the red laser light frequency makes it look transparent to the hair.  It is like how infra-red light can go through a “solid” wall but you can still “see” it with your eyes.

Finally, where the hair is thin there is less mass blocking the laser light, so obviously more laser light energy can get absorbed by the surrounding hair follicle cells.  Add all these all together, the sweeping motion of the lasers, the open space of melanin that is really there, and the local density of the hairs, and  no you can see how most of the energy gets through to do the job of knocking off the DHT (dihydrotestosterone)*.

This is one of those ‘It depends’ questions, but in most cases the answer is no. Once the subcutaneous fat is gone form the scalp and the blood flow diminished, it is hard to impossible to restart the follicle up again. The old term “chrome-dome” really says the scalp is finished as a fertile ground for growth. It has become tight, thin, and rigid (one of the simple tests we do is to see how much the scalp moves and how deep it feels. A loose and mobile scalp is generally a good sign).

Hair follicles need fat to live in, they need depth of tissue to move in (yes, they move about in their growth cycles).

The follicle lives in cycles and only does 20 to 25 of them in one’s lifetime. As it goes through the cycles it essentially elongates downward during growth and pulls upward during sleep. Healthy hair requires the ability to move a bit laterally and a bunch in rotation to accommodate the physical movement of the hair strand from outside sources.  When held in place so the follicle can not ‘give’,  the hair tears up the cells in the follicle as it moves and the follicle does not regenerate.

The main reason for men’s hair loss is a male hormone called DHT (dihydrotestosterone)*.  Naturally produced DHT builds up in the fat around a hair follicle and constricts the blood vessels and the resulting blood flowing to it. It also chemically signals the hair follicle cells to “turn off.” As a result, the hair follicle does not  produce enough keratin nor get enough nourishment and the hair becomes thin and finally drops off. Eventually the follicle literally starves to death.

DHT is very important in making a man a man and not a woman, and it is important not to destroy it, just limit its effects on the hair follicle.

Chemical or drug solutions to lessen the effect of DHT at the hair follicle can affect it elsewhere in the body. These affects include feminizing results on a man. Both Rogaine® and Propecia® can have this and other side effects** and use of these treatments should be considered with caution.

When too much DHT is produced in one area of the scalp, it will slowly spread throughout the skin. This is why balding typically spreads out in a circle. The client is isolated from the machine by a plastic barrier and there are not parts accessible to either the client or operator. Unique to the ManeGain Hair Restoration Therapy Station is the Sanitation Shield between the user’s head and the lasers inside. To comply with FDA rules about AIDS / HIV sanitation, this plastic shield is wiped down with an alcohol “wipe” after every use.

This is a yes and no answer. No formal certification from the FDA or any other part of the Medical Community is required to own, operate, or sell the services of a ManeGain Hair Restoration Therapy Station other than local ordinances under normal business conditions. The FDA has already approved the use of the lasers employed in our Station, and there are no harmful effects of visible light so nothing else is needed there.

There is Certification available from ManeGain to assure quality of operation and use of the ManeGain Hair Rejuvenation Therapy Station. The Company issues an Operations Management Certificate and a ManeGain Operators Certificate for one or more persons who will recommend or operate the ManeGain Hair Rejuvenation Station after training is completed.

There are 12 types or stages of balding in men, and 5 types in women. Since the ManeGain Hair Rejuvenation Therapy diffuses its three forms of energy to the whole scale and hair follicles, and because all your hair is experiencing some form of hormonal stress, we do NOT use a calibration chart to set the ManeGain Rejuvenation Station for each particular type of balding pattern. The ManeGain Therapy will progressively rejuvenate all your hair follicles depending on what state they are in until total hair regrowth is achieved.  For a more detailed explanation, go to The ManeGain Effect™ post.

The lasers employed in the ManeGain Natural Hair Rejuvenation Station are special, solid-state devices know as a Low-Level Lasers (LLL). These lasers are categorized by the FDA as Class-III devices and are certified for use without protective glasses or lenses.

These lasers present no danger to the skin. The whole idea behind using lasers is to lessen the effects of DHT on the hair follicle. Safety is maintained by keeping the power output of each laser diode to under 5mW (milliwatt). Too strong of a laser will destroy the hair follicle. High power lasers (1,000 times more powerful than what we are using) are used in laser hair removal.

In the ManeGain Hair Restoration Station, each laser operates at a 650nm (nanometer) wavelength and has its own individual controller/regulator to assure precise photon (light) delivery and power levels.

Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) for hair restoration and regrowth is acknowledged by the FDA as a non-invasive technology employing low-level lasers below the power levels specified by FDA regulation. As the type and use of the lasers in ManeGain Hair Rejuvenation Station all comply with FDA standards, regulations, and guidelines: there is no user or owner FDA related issues.

The FDA does not approve any of the LLLT hair products because the FDA only approves Medical Devices or items that are engaged in the curing of a disease. Androgenic Alopecia is note classified as a disease but as a genetic propensity. As such it has no cure and the FDA does not engage in the approval or disapproval such devices. The FDA has cleared all LLLT devices that comply with FDA and WHO (World Health Organization) energy emissions standards. ManeGain meets and exceeds all their criteria.

The FDA and the FTC are sensitive to the enforcement of misleading or unrealistic claims about the veracity of a product. The FDA has reviewed studies done by private parties as to the efficacy of such products and accepted them without comment as the current state of the knowledge about all product employing the LLLT process.

Other company’s marketing materials imply that their product has an FDA approval as a medical product, but this is not true, no one has such an approval.

The ManeGain Hair Restoration Therapy Station is a standard electrical appliance for professional use, and would be consider no different than your hairdryer or vibrating chair. The Station is UL and CSA approved, uses standard 120-volt AC power out of wall socket, and is fully fused and controlled for power surges internally.

ManeGain has never pursued the eyebrow issue.  We are always reluctant to have people’s eyes too close to lasers even though we know that the FDA and WHO have done studies which say this is not a problem and has cleared the lasers we use as safe. We have some antidotal information that says it grows eyebrows, so this is one of the areas ManeGain will want to study in the future.  But for now, the Company does not have enough data to say positively that it works.  Once we can say definitively that it can effect eyebrow growth, we will put out a notification.
